Commission a Torah Scroll

Writing a Sefer Torah fulfils the last of the 613 mitzvot: “Therefore, write down this song and teach it to the people of Israel” (Devarim 31:19). There is no more meaningful way to leave a living legacy for your children, your grandchildren and your community.

 

As a Torah scribe who has completed 13 Torah scrolls for synagogues in Israel, Canada, the United States and Hong Kong, I guide families, schools and congregations through the entire process. I match your project with the right sofer and take care of everything from A to Z, from the first letter to the final stitch.

1. Your Specifications

Tell me the size you have in mind (from 30 to 42 cm), the script (Beit Yosef, Ari or Vellish) and the date you are working toward. I will also want to hear about the school, synagogue or family that will receive the Torah, so the scroll fits its home.

2. The Right Sofer

I match your project with the right scribe from my trusted circle of highly experienced colleagues, sofrim I have worked with for years, many with twenty or more Torahs to their name. I oversee every stage, from the first letter to the final stitch.

3. Writing & Verification

Every letter is written by hand on kosher parchment with traditional ink. When the writing is finished, the scroll is checked by a professional examiner (magiah) and by computer, and it comes to you with a letter certifying that it is kosher.

4. Timeline

A new Torah written from the first letter takes about 14 months. If your date is sooner, I can find a scroll already in progress and see it through to completion in time for your celebration.

5. Finishing Touches

Atzei chaim (the wooden rollers) and a mantle, custom-made or standard, with your dedication engraved or embroidered. Every scroll arrives ready to be read from on the day it is dedicated.

6. A Community Project

The writing of a Torah can become a year of learning for your whole community, from the first sheet to the very last letters, with workshops along the way. See how it works below.

A Community Torah

A new Torah can bring a whole community together. We launch the project with a ceremony around the first sheet, "In the beginning", and through the year I return for workshops, talks and progress updates for children and adults.

At the dedication the five books are sewn together, members of the community appoint the scribe to fill in the outlined final letters on their behalf, the last words are completed together, and the new Torah is danced into its home.
