“Tefillin are the glory of Israel.”
Talmud Sucah 25a
The Mizvah (precept) of wearing Tefillin (phylacteries) is mentioned four times in the Torah within passages that describe fundamental concepts in Judaism:

1) The deliverance from Egypt (Ex. 13:1-10)
2) The giving of the Land of Israel ( Ex. 13:11-6)
3) The Shema Israel (statement of faith in God, (Deut. 6:4-9)
4) The Relationship to God that is strengthened when performing Torah precepts (Deut. 11:13-21)

To honor and remember these concepts, we wear the Tefillin containing these hand-scripted passages in our daily prayers. It is a great mitzvah and privilege for every man from the age of thirteen on (bar mitzvah) to wear his own a pair of Tefillin.

Great expertise, time and effort are required to manufacture Batim. KtavTam works with three types:

Gasot Batim (thick) are made from one solid piece of leather from a thick skinned animal like a cow or bull. These Batim are the highest halachic and aesthetic quality. With little care, they will last a lifetime and if service is required, they can be repaired and refinished like new.

Dakot (thin) are made from one piece of leather of a thin-skinned animal like a goat. They are reinforced using thick and hard leather. These Batim are reasonably sturdy, however, because they are thin, the shape may change.

Peshutim mehudarim (nice and simple) are made from one piece of parchment, cut,folded and glued to create a square box. Additional pieces may be added for reinforcement. These Batim are least preferable according to some Halachic authorities
